The Tenth Doctor

Now we are fast approaching hte present era of Doctor Who as we steamroller into the end of 2005 and, for the first time ever, a Doctor Who Christmas special. However, we saw little of the newly regenerated Doctor, him being confined to his bed until the end. But what a Doctor he was! David Tennant was the man who, for many, would become their Doctor. Gone was the battle scarred Doctor, fresh from the field of battle and here was Doctor that was manic and extible, loving every second of danger which presented itself to him. He quickly rose through the ranks of people's favorite Doctors, establishing himself as many peoples favorites. Then, in 2008, after winning a National Television Award David announced that he would be leaving Doctor Who after the planned 2009 specials. You could almost hear the hearts of thousands of girls breaking at that news. David, while not my favorite Doctor by a long shot, does hold a special place in my heart when it comes to Doctor Who. If it can be said that Christoper Eccleston was responsible for getting Doctor's foot in the door of public awareness then David certainly smashed the door open for the television show.

The Tenth Doctor
The lonely angel
Hiding his eternal sadness and loneliness behind a desire to place his life in danger
Sacrificed his life for a friend after a battle with his own people
Undeniably afraid of his own death
Put off the change in order to get his reward; ‘I don’t want to go!”

The Ninth Doctor

And so we approach the current time, the modern time. In 2003 it was announced by the BBC that Doctor Who would return to the screens of homes everywhere. Rumor quickly started with fans about who would be the Doctor, would Paul McGann return or would a new man take over the iconic role? Finally, in 2004, it was announced that Christopher Eccleston would take on the role as the Ninth Doctor and that Billie Piper would be taken on as his companion called Rose Tyler. While the series was met well the news that Christopher Eccleston would be leaving after just the one series cause a mixture of different emotions among the fan community, raging from outrage to disappointment.

Christopher Eccleston, despite the fact that he left after the one series, was a good Doctor who portrayed the Time Lord just as he should have been portrayed at the time; a battle scarred, world weary man.

The Ninth Doctor
The destroyer of his world and people.
The U-boat captain hiding his pain behind a grim and angry persona
A new deep appreciation for the universe but more easily saw the negatives of humanity
Met his end at the hands of his own companion.
Absorbing the whole of the Time Vortex to ensure her survival.

The Eighth Doctor

Ah and so at last, at long last may be more apt, we enter the 1990s and the years in which I was born in. Doctor Who had been off the air for a number of years and I'm sure many fans had given up hope that the Mad Man with a Box  would re-appear on our screens, how wrong they were. In 1996 Doctor Who burst onto our screens once more in the form of a television movie. this was, effectively, an attempt by the Americans to get a piece of wonderful show and, perhaps, sadly it did not succeed. Although the new Doctor, the eighth as played by Paul McGann, is counted as an official Doctor it was left to Big Finish Audio and others to chronicle his adventures. Once again Doctor Who faded back into the wood work and so it would seemingly stay forever...or would it?.......

The Eighth Doctor
The romantic Doctor
An enduring vulnerability that contrasted with his sense of urgency and decisiveness
A flippant sense of humour
Met his end during the Time War, most likely alone

The Seventh Doctor

So it has come to pass, after a short break, that we come to the 7th  Doctor as played by Sylvester McCoy. This Doctor is also one of my favorites, the other being the 5th Doctor of course. This heralded an era where mystery was attempted to be placed back into Doctor Who, references were made to the Doctor actually being at the very beginning of the Time Lords and to be more then just a Time Lord. Sadly these references were never revealed as anything as the BBC placed the show on an indefinite hiatus in 1989 leaving Doctor Who fans bereft of any sort of Doctor Who.

The Seventh Doctor
The dark manipulator Doctor
Saw people as pawns on a chess board to be used in his fight against evil
Manipulative words were his weapons of choice
Caught in a hail of bullets in San Francisco
Met his end on the operating table, circulatory system damaged

The Sixth Doctor

The sixth Doctor, hated by many at the time due to he nature and his coat. Which is a shame as I find the coat to be rather wonderful if I am terribly honest. This was a time when Doctor Who came under attack from all sides, it was put ion hiatus for a number of months and when it came back it was with a long reaching story line which lasted the enter season, The Trial of the Time Lord it was called and it was as if the show was on trial itself. After that season end Colin Baker, who portrayed the Doctor was asked to come back to film a regeneration and then he would be replaced. Colin, obviously, refused this and stated, quite rightly, that he would be happy to do a further season and then regenerate. The BBC never got back to him about it and the next thing he knew Doctor Who was back on the screen with a different Doctor. Perhaps what is most admirable about Colin is that he never wished Doctor Who ill will despite the events of his departure, he has always been a firm supporter of the show.

The Sixth Doctor
The unpredictable Doctor
A brash exterior hid this Doctor’s determination to defeat evil
More accepting of death and violence, murdering when he deemed it necessary
His end is wrapped in confusion and different theories
Was forced to Lakertya by the Rani as he regenerated
